All Glock Calibers - Glocks are all Spartan weapons that one model could easily be mistaken for another, but there are subtle and significant differences between the generations.
Having covered the basics in Part 1, we can now move on to the specifications: sizes, ranges and which models they are compatible with.
All Glock Calibers
Glock handguns are identified by generation and model number and further classified by size, including how they fit into these categories: standard, compact, subcompact, slimline, competition, long slide and crossover.

Standard Glocks are full-size pistols designed for duty and home defense use. Barrel lengths range between 4.49 inches and 4.61 inches, depending on the caliber. Standard-sized Glocks are some of the best-selling pistols and strike the perfect balance between size, weight, and control.
Compact is a relative term. These Glocks are still quite large with a barrel length of 4.02 inches and a grip that fills your hand. A slightly shorter grip and longer barrel make them easier to conceal and more comfortable to carry, while maintaining control of the gun. That being said, this is the most popular range of Glock sizes.
Subcompact Glocks are designed for concealed carry weapons and backup guns. This weapon sports an ultra-short frame, and depending on the caliber the barrel length varies between 3.43 inches and 3.78 inches. These guns are easy to carry and conceal in almost any way.
These little beauties are designed to be hidden. The Glock Slimline pistol's design is ultra-concealable, accurate, and comfortable for all shooters, regardless of hand size. The frame features an integral beavertail, textured grip for easy control, and a reversible magazine catch.

Larger than full size, we are talking about weapons made mostly for competition shooting. They have a standard sized frame but a longer slide and barrel. A longer slide and barrel gives a longer sight radius and higher velocity, as well as less recoil and muzzle flip.
Crossover Glocks are a combination of a full-size grip and a compact slide. The design was originally promoted for Army MHS competition, but has become popular in the civilian sector as well. Glock also considers the G43X a crossover, but it's also single stack, so Glock's size remains controversial.

The story of Glock is quite remarkable considering that the man who designed the gun knew nothing about pistol design. Gaston Glock sold curtain rods and knives to the Austrian military, and is familiar with injection-made parts. His team designed the Model 17 pistol to help the Austrian military in need of a new sidearm, and a firearms legend was born. An interesting note is that the "17" represents the 17th patent issued to the Glock Corporation, and this numbering system continues to this day.

Shooters are either Glock fans or detractors - there's not much middle ground. I'm one of those rare birds who is in the middle of my opinion about Gaston's wunderkind. I have a model 30 .45 ACP which is nice and has an aftermarket barrel so I can shoot my handloads of cast bullets. It is well done without being overly ostentatious. Eye candy was not a gun. I called out Glocks in another article I wrote about the Chevy Impala of the pistol industry. The Impala is a great mid-priced car that's a popular choice among car buyers - it's reliable and well designed without being overbearing.
The Glock, like the Impala, operates in a utilitarian manner. It can complete the work without harming the hands and feet. And, they are very reliable. All the police agencies that have bought into the Glock system are good proof of this.
Narrowing it down a bit, let's take a look at Glock's best sellers. In terms of caliber, the 9mm rules the roost for Glock. And, of the more than fifty pistol models that Glock sells, the best seller is the 9mm Model 19. This compact pistol packs 15+ 1 rounds into one small package. I know several people who carry this model, as it seems to hit the optimal middle ground between concealable size and carrying capacity. I put together a specification comparison chart for all those detail-oriented shooters out there with the most popular models as well as an extended version comparing all twenty. Of course, some of these models are quite rare in gun shops because they serve a very specific purpose (eg: long-range competition, at which the Model 34 excels). So, before we go over all the chart numbers, let's look at the most popular Glock 9mms in detail.

Now, let's look at the individual models, but before that, a little clarification is necessary. If you take a look at the table above, you'll see "MOS" and "FS" listed after some of the models. MOS stands for Modular Optical System. Glock modified the frame on this weapon by adding a slot in front of the rear sight to accept a red dot or other sight mounting plate. It is covered with filler when not in use.
FS means the weapon features front (slide) serrations. Those pistols marked as FS have serrations on the front of the slide to aid in manipulating the slide, in addition to the standard rear serrations. Many shooters are asking Glock to include front serrations on all of their new guns. So far they only apply to weapons that are marked FS.

An explanation of Glock generations is in order, if we keep this article as simple as possible for those of you who are thinking of buying a Glock. A "generation" in Glock terminology is equivalent to other companies coming up with "Mod 2", "2.0", etc. It basically specified a major overhaul of the features on their weapons. The feature change (usually called an upgrade) may be something minor, something more "large", or a combination of both in order to qualify for the next generation. So, here we go from the original Glock (now called the Gen1) to the latest generation at the time of this writing, the Gen5.
