For those of us who are gun enthusiasts and haven't been living under a rock for the past 3 decades, the name Glock has become a household word in the shooting universe. People who may never have held a gun (let alone a Glock) recognize the name. It is estimated that 65% of US police departments use some form of Glock. It's time for us to take an in-depth look at everything you need to know about the Glock 9mm and its various models. We will consider.
All Compact Glocks
The story of the Glock is quite remarkable considering that the man who designed the gun knew next to nothing about gun design. Gaston Glock sold curtain rods and knives to the Austrian army and was familiar with injection molded parts. His team designed the Model 17 pistol to help the Austrian Army in need of a new sidearm, and a firearms legend was born. Interestingly, the "17" represents the 17th patent to the Glock Corporation, and this numbering system continues to this day.

Shooters tend to be either Glock fans or detractors; I am one of those rare birds who has my own opinion about Gaston's prodigy. I had a Model 30 .45 ACP for a long time and had an aftermarket barrel for it so I could shoot my cast bullets. It did well without being too ostentatious. Gun eye candy it wasn't. I called Glocks the Chevy Impala of the gun industry in another article I wrote. The Impala is a good, mid-priced car that is a popular choice among car buyers, reliable and well made without being too flashy.
The Glock, like the Impala, gets the job done in a utilitarian way. It gets the job done without costing an arm and a leg. And they are very reliable. All the police agencies buying the Glock system is a pretty good proof of that.
Narrowing it down a bit, let's take a look at the top Glock sellers. When it comes to caliber, the 9mm rules the Glock. And of the more than fifty pistol models that Glock sells, their best-selling model is the 9mm Model 19. This compact pistol packs 15+ 1 rounds into a small package. I know a lot of people who carry this model because it seems to hit the optimal middle ground between hidden size and power. Well, if that's not for you, you have 19 other basic 9mm Glock model choices.
Best Glock For First Time Buyers
I've put together a table comparing specs for the most popular models, as well as an extended version comparing all twenty for all detail-oriented shooters. Admittedly, some of these models are quite rare in gun shops, as they tend to serve a very specific purpose (such as long-range competition, in which the Model 34 excels). So before we go over all the numbers in the table, let's take a closer look at the most popular Glock 9mm.

Now let's look at the individual models, but before that a little explanation is necessary. If you look at the table above, you will see "MOS" and "FS" mentioned after some of the models. MOS stands for Modulated Optical System. Glock modified the scope of these pistols by hollowing out the front of the rear sight to accept a red dot or another sight mounting plate. This is covered by padding when not in use.
FS means that the guns contain Front (slide) Serrations. Those rifles marked FS have serrations at the front of the slide in addition to the standard rear serrations. Many shooters asked Glock to include front serrations on all of their new guns. So far they have only applied them to rifles marked FS.

An explanation of the Glock generations is necessary if we want to keep this article as useful as possible for those of you who are considering purchasing a Glock. In Glock terminology, "Generation" is similar to other companies calling it "Mod 2", "2.0", etc. It basically means a major revision of the functions of their guns. Feature changes (commonly called updates) can be a few minor, a few "major" in size, or a combination of both to qualify for the next generation. So here we go from the original Glock (now called the Gen1) to the new generation as of this writing, the Gen5.
This is an original, bare bones Glock Model 17. We can identify this gun by the relative absence of burrs or texture on the frame and the finger grooves. This is the Glock that originally equipped the Austrian army when they ordered 25,000 pistols in 1983. Here is an interesting note. In addition to the Model 17 pistols sold to the army, there were also Model 18s; capacity that fires between 1100-1300 RPM. Glock also offered an offset version of this pistol (Model 18C). It was technically an automatic pistol, and as such was subject to the regulations and taxes imposed on machine gun ownership as those individuals found out who tried to buy it.
They gave the Model 22 RTF2 (.40 S&W) a rough, textured finish and herringbone slides and a new checkerboard for 2009. Other models available with RTF2 development included the 31, 32, 23, 21. and 19, though' t not all had gill-like teeth.
Starting with the Model 17, we see a full size frame and a longer barrel than the smaller models. This pistol was the first Glock to go mainstream. This was mainly due to some units of the Austrian army and police that started in 1982. I remember when the gun came out, the first "plastic gun" that went worldwide (the H & K VP70 was technically the first polymer gun introduced in 1970. for the German market).

Opponents all thought this "plastic gun" would be invisible to airport metal detectors, and some in the shooting community believed the gun would fail because of concerns about the durability of the gun's frame. No worries mean nothing. they just didn't happen. Instead, the pistol's reliability and innovative design have made it a must-have not only for military and police units, but also for civilians. A rifle averages only 35 parts...talk about simplicity. My brother has a Gen 4 Model 17 that he loves. I took a picture of it and was impressed. Because of its size, the 17 isn't really made for concealed carry. It is more at home in a policeman's level 3 contained pod or a military SOE operator's tactical pedestal.
The Model 17 comes in Gen 3, 4 and 5 versions. So if you like finger grooves (or not), you're in luck. just buy the generation that has what you want. Need a competition gun? Take a Gen4 or Gen5 MOS and put a red dot sight on it. Do you want a casual shooter? Get a Gen3 and save some money (if you can still find one). The Model 17, as mentioned above, started it all.
Ok… now let's look at the compact 9mm. As the best-selling Glock, the Model 19 has its share of enthusiastic users. Let's not forget the aftermarket parts industry either. The Model 19 probably has more third party parts than any other Glock. That said, the Model 19 is nearly perfect for IWB or OWB concealed carry with its 4-inch barrel, slim one-quarter inch width, and 15 rounds in the magazine. As I have written before, this pistol is the standard by which other compact 9mms are judged.
I know several people who wear the Model 19 and love it. It is no coincidence that Glock decided to release the Model 17 and Model 19 first in their Gen5 configuration. 17, with its law enforcement features, and the Model 19, the best-selling Glock.

The Gen5 Model 19 was generally well received. The only complaint I've heard about the Gen5 Model 19 is about the cutout on the bottom of the frame. Some shooters say it hurts their hand because it's at the point where the heel and palm of their hand meet the frame. They say the sharp end is to blame. This does not seem to be a problem with the Model 17 due to the longer grip frame. Fortunately, they have addressed this problem in the new Model 45 (below).
